Much of Alaska's history involved the gold rush, so we decided to try our hand at gold panning. There's a mine north of Fairbanks that introduces people to gold mining and demonstrates how people used to originally mine for gold. Not much has changed in the last century, and we were allowed to pan for gold with our own poke (bag of dirt with gold in it).
We learned how to properly pan and off we went. Andrew was very excited when he saw his "yellow flash" and discovered there was gold at the bottom of his pan!
After we were through, we had around $70 of gold from our three poke bags. Not bad for an hour of gold panning!
The train depot was quite lovely. We thought it was a nice touch to have flowers and grass growing from the roof.
Andrew enjoyed learning about mining and became a true part of the gold rush when he started asking for MORE gold!
